Queen of Wands

Today’s card — the Queen of Wands — encourages you to conduct yourself with fairness, grace and integrity in all of your dealings with others.

The Queen of Wands — like all of the court cards in the tarot — can refer to a person, an event or a part of yourself. She embodies the feminine or yin aspects of Fire (wands) energy: creativity, passion, enthusiasm and drive.

She’s strong and dynamic, stands out in a crowd, possesses leadership qualities and elicits respect from others. She’s also very worldly and knowledgeable.

In this version of the card, the Queen stands tall and proud with a jewel-tipped scepter in her hands. A gold crown rests on her head and a world map stretches out behind her. Even in this simple rendition her command and authority are clear.

If this is a person in your life, know that she’s honest and impartial and will treat you with respect. She may be a supervisor, a parent, a friend or even some facet of yourself that has long been dormant.

If the card refers to you, see it as a reminder that you do possess these qualities and may need to reincorporate them into your personality. The presence of this card encourages you to recapture the essence of the Queen of Wands and put her to good use.

Two of Wands

The Two of Wands — like all Twos — refers to taking the spark of an idea (seen in the Aces) and forming it into a tangible, working plan.

This requires looking at it from all angles — weighing the pros and cons, evaluating time and energy, separating the wheat from the chaff and so on. This is beautifully represented in the imagery depicted on this version of the card.

Here we see two leopards — one dark and one light — each standing watch by their own ornate pillars. The dark leopard is an exact mirror image of the light. Their sleek bodies curve toward one another and become “one,” reminding us of the power of uniting opposing forces to make one stronger entity. The Sun shines high in the sky between them.

The key here is balance: you won’t be able to make something happen without careful consideration and planning. And all the planning in the world won’t cause your ideas to materialize without putting in the effort.

There’s a certain give and take with the Two of Wands (as with all Twos in the tarot) that is mirrored right back to you. There’s also a need for discrimination — throwing out the unrealistic or half-baked ideas and focusing on what has a genuine shot at being successful. The Two of Wands requires you to be objective and this is why it’s always wise to bounce your ideas off of another.

Nine of Pentacles

Today is a good day to be present in the moment and to be grateful for all that you’ve acquired.

The Nine of Pentacles is all about enjoying the bounty that life affords you rather than focusing on what you lack. You may be feeling good about how far you’ve come and deserving of all you’ve been able to acquire. And now is the time to start enjoying it.

There are symbols of abundance and prosperity all throughout this card — from the colors on the card to her lavish jewelry to the bowl of grapes and gold coins around her neck to the partridge on her shoulder. Even the pine bough behind her is said to represent fertility and immortality. The woman in this card appears to be content which what she has: she knows she’s earned and deserves it.

You may not be feeling very “prosperous,” especially if you’ve been struggling to make ends meet. But this card is all about putting that consciousness into perspective, and focusing on what you have rather than what you don’t.

Sometimes the Nine of Pentacles appears as a generous benefactor or someone who opens a door for you that leads to a good financial opportunity. If this is the case be mindful of his (or her) contribution and make sure you give credit where credit is due.

The Empress

Look around you today at the people who depend on you and look up to your for guidance and encouragement.

The Empress card represents the aspects of ourselves that evoke the principles of feminine strength and power. As the counterpart to the Emperor card, this archetype is all about the yin or feminine aspects of parental authority and protection, regardless of gender.

Where the Emperor focuses on wisdom, stability and responsibility, the Empress relates more to nurturing, comfort, support and emotional security. It is the “Earth Mother” archetype personified.

In this rendition of the card, we see a regal woman dressed in colorful royal garb. She wears an ornate helmet headress, dripping with jewels and feathers. There’s a giant cat tapestry behind her and a purring jaguar at her feet.

She may be sensitive but she’s no push-over. In this rendition of the card she casts an imposing figure. She stands perfectly still but holds her staff at the ready, just in case she has to mete out discipline.

This woman could be your mother, your boss, an older female relative or friend. Or she could be some aspect of yourself — particularly if you find yourself in the role of parent, mentor, or supervisor.

Three of Arrows

The green-eyed monster known as “jealousy” may make an appearance for you today, whether you’re prepared for that or not.

In the Wildwood Tarot, this card is called the Three of Arrows. It refers to that knife in the heart feeling of being hurt, betrayed or just seething in anger over an emotional situation that you have little control over.

This may refer to a literal breakup or the loss of a friendship, or it can be that eye-opening moment when you realize that what (or whom) you’ve wanted so badly just doesn’t want you back.

The Three of Swords in general refers to feelings of sadness, loneliness, suffering and pain. In this version though the word “Jealousy” is associated with the card, adding a whole new layer.

Here we see a wooden heart hanging from a rope that’s been tied to the limb of a tree. Three arrows are piercing the heart — and drawing blood — while flames shoot out from the side.

There’s so much poignant imagery in this card as simple as it is. The heart looks old and weathered, the tree looks deprecate, the grass and brush surrounding it looks dead.

Princess of Arrows

The Princess of Arrows is this deck’s version of the Page of Swords. In the Lover’s Path Tarot set, the Princesses are represented by famed goddesses, and this particular card references the Greek Goddess Psyche.

Psyche was naive, immature, curious and capricious. Also quite beautiful. But she was born a mortal and only became a goddess after many trials and tribulations. Her story is one of ultimate growth and redemption, but not without wreaking havoc at almost every turn.

In this version of the card we see a young Psyche holding an arrow and surrounded by butterflies. The Greek word for butterfly is Psyche (also the word for “Soul’). The arrow comes from Cupid, who accidentally pricked himself, thus binding them together for eternity.

The Pages / Princesses all represent the first sign of their related element: in this case Air and therefore Gemini. As they’re also all very youthful, we often see the more immature and unbridled energy associated with those signs.

Temperance

Today you will be called upon to integrate opposing areas of your life into one big calm, peaceful and harmonious medium.

The Temperance card speaks of searching within yourself for that wellspring of inner grace and finding a way to bring the good and bad, light and dark, happy and sad back in to balance.

The Temperance card is called “Art” in some decks. It speaks of the unique creative forces that each of us possess. It speaks of seeking out symmetry and harmony.

In what areas of your life are you too inflexible, too rigid and too unwilling to hear another’s point of view? Your challenge will be to overcome those impediments and to integrate the opposing forces in your life.

In this version of the card we see an angel standing in a field and pouring fluid from one vessel into another. The grass is green and abundant at her feet, the sky is clear and the Sun shines behind her. The rainbow that is usually seen in this card is actually a part of her in this version. In her gown, in her wings and in the landscape behind her.

Her demeanor is calm and peaceful — almost trance-like, as if she’s mesmerized by the process. This is the essence of this card: there’s a calm and graceful symmetry in taking one’s time, going with the flow, and becoming one with all that surrounds you.

Knight of Cups

Today would be a good day to put all rational thinking aside and indulge instead in your wildest romantic dreams and fantasies.

As with all the Court cards, the Knight of Cups may be someone presently in your life (or someone resurfacing from your past), or he could represent certain facets of you or of events taking place in your life.

If he’s someone in your life now, you will know him by his gentle, soft-spoken demeanor. He’s a lover not a fighter and can therefore be a bit passive. He’s governed by his feelings and may be given to flights of romantic fancy.

He often appears as a messenger — professing his feelings, offering an invitation or making a proposal. An unexpected contact or message, happy news from a loved one, or someone reaching out to you from your past are just a few examples.

In this rendition of the card we see a Knight and a fair maiden on an ornate wooden horse, flying high above his Kingdom. In the story that is the basis for this card — found on the Sacred Texts website — the horse was a gift to the King of Persia, meant to procure his daughter’s hand in marriage. Through many ups and downs, the story continues with the Prince (her brother) traveling the world — and finding love — on his wayward horse.

Ace of Pentacles

You’re starting to manifest more abundance and prosperity into your life.

The Ace of Pentacles — like all Aces — represents the start of something new, and in this case it happens to relate to money. As in new financial opportunities coming your way. While you probably won’t see a windfall, it’s a positive affirmation that you’re putting your energy into the right areas.

You may have recently gotten a raise, started a new job or become the benefactor of someone else’s generosity. You could also be starting to see returns on your earlier investments. Either way, you should have more opportunities and more financial resources at your disposal than you’ve had in recent months.

You may also feel that your luck is changing. As the Ace of Pentacles is associated with a change in fortune — a positive change as I also see Aces as “Yes” cards — as long as the “yes” answer is a positive affirmation. It’s telling you to keep up the good work, to go after your dreams, and to see the bounty that’s coming your way as confirmation from the Universe that you’re on the right track.

In this rendition two brightly colored Japanese-style Koi or “lucky” fish encircle a single coin. Another fish is imprinted on the coin, assuming an almost Ouroborus-like configuration. The coin itself and the fish surrounding it, contain all of the colors of the rainbow. The idea that there is a limitless supply of money (or material resources) is well-depicted here.

Six of Wands

Today may see you getting some much-deserved approval or recognition from your peers. The Six of Wands refers to support, approval and acclaim, brought about by something you’ve worked hard to achieve.

You may have been putting a lot of effort into your work and not even realizing that others have taken notice. Or you could be unexpectedly pulled aside by a loved one, just to tell you how much you’re loved and appreciated.

In this version of the card we see a beautiful blue butterfly emerging from a sparse landscape of dried-out brush. She may have just emerged from her cocoon and is now taking her maiden flight. This simple rendition perfectly depicts both the sense of “standing out in a crowd” and of “rising above triumphantly” that is so much a part of this archetype.

The Six of Wands is a card of appreciation and admiration. You “win” something and have earned the right to be satisfied with the spoils of your victory. This isn’t about ego or conceit and it’s never at someone else’s expense. There’s a strong sense of being supported and lifted up by others who rejoice right along with you.

You could be in line for a promotion or award at work. You could be given the ok to go ahead with a project you’ve been excited about. Or it may be as simple as pat on the back and some words of encouragement by those who look up to you.

The World

You may be on the verge of closing the door on an important chapter in your life today and preparing to open another.

The World card — called the Universe in some decks — completes the Fool’s journey and as such, speaks of fulfillment, integration and completion.

For example, you could be finishing a course or internship, tying up lose ends on a project that you’re ready to launch, putting a failed relationship behind you and getting back into the dating scene, finishing (and feeling good about) a self-improvement regimen, etc.

The possibilities are limitless, but in all of the above scenarios the World card does not signify an ending as much as it does a new beginning. You’ve put something behind you in order to begin anew, a little higher up on the rungs this time.

In this version of the card — which is not a part of a specific tarot deck but an image that depicts this archetype beautifully — we see a woman suspended in the night sky. Stars twinkle all around her as she stares off into the distance. A globe is imprinted on her skirt and she holds two more in her hands.

Death

Today you may be putting to rest something that is no longer conducive to your growth.

The Death card is not a literal death — it refers to an ending and a letting go of something that you no longer need — whether you realize that or not. Sometimes this is a painful ending — as in the end of a relationship, the loss of a job, a friend that moves away, etc.

So there are tears and mourning and a period of recovery, but also a rejoicing in the new opportunities that this loss affords you.

The Death card is more about transitions than it is about endings. But we tend to not see it that way when we lose someone (or something) we love. Additionally, we usually don’t consider something we give up willingly to be a “loss.” In this respect it’s not a happy transition — at least not until what’s been taken has been restored.

The woman in this card appears to be floating in a sea of blood. A Vulture stands near ready to pick her carcass clean. As macabre as this may seem, it aptly describes what the most excruciating losses feel like to those who’ve experienced them.
