Eight of Swords

As Mercury opposes Saturn today, you may need to think about your own limitations, and how you’ve contributed to the obstacles that stand between you and your goals.

The Eight of Swords speaks of self-imposed limitations. You may feel powerless in your current circumstances and may be so caught up in blaming the people or events that have brought you to this that you’re unable to see a way out.

In this version of the card — from the gorgeous Shadowscapes Tarot — we see a graceful swan rendered almost entirely immobile by a the thorny branches of a blackberry bush. Eight Swords are placed strategically around her, amongst the decaying carcasses of earlier captives.

She longs to break free, but her struggles against the confines of her “cage” cause her to get even more tangled in the bush. A tiny hummingbird flits above her taunting her with its agility.

But look closely at the hummingbird and you can see that it’s not taunting at all. It’s actually showing the swan the way out. It flutters its tiny wings and coaxes her toward the light.

If it can just get the swan to stop panicking and calm down, it can navigate its way through the brambles and disentangle her from the brush.

The Mercury / Saturn opposition can be a tough one. It tends to make things seem much worse than they are. Saturn represents limitations and restrictions, and its opposition to the planet that rules thoughts and ideas (Mercury) can make your situation seem more bleak.

But as always with the Eight of Swords there is a way out. It may require a bit of ingenuity — much like is seen in this card. But it mainly involves simply opening your eyes, changing your perspective and finding a workable solution.

Seven of Wands

You may find yourself in the position of having to stand up for you believe in today, even if it means standing up against others.

The Seven of Wands speaks of a need to be more alert, guarded and cautious, rather than accepting things at face value.

You may face opposition from others — in the form of competition or outright resistance.

You may feel attacked or ganged up on. You may also have to reconcile a “me against the world” attitude before it turns into a chip on your shoulder.

This is not the time to rest on your laurels. You need to be braced for attack as your views are more than likely going to rub others the wrong way.

This doesn’t mean you need to be aggressive or combative. It’s actually just the opposite. You need to adopt a defensive posture in order to deflect the daggers that will more than likely be flung your way.

The woman in this card — from the beautiful Sun and Moon Tarot — may be outnumbered. There are Six wands raised against her while she has only one. But she’s wisely positioned it in a protective stance so that no part of her being is vulnerable.

This is the message behind the Seven of Wands. You don’t cave in and you don’t cower in fear. Instead — like the woman in this card — you hold your ground and defend your turf, never wavering from your commitment to valor.

Think about the areas in your own life where you’re feeling more guarded and alert. You may feel challenged or unsupported, and it may be hard to see your way around the obstacles before you. But the Seven of Wands is a card of bravery; of standing tall, holding your ground and proceeding onward even in the face of adversity.

As Mercury enters Gemini today you may wake up with a spring in your step, ready to tackle whatever misadventures come your way.

The Page of Swords — this version from the Tarot of the Magical Forest — is known for having places to go and people to see. He’s restless, distractible and easily bored, so if this is someone in your life make sure you’ve got ways to keep him entertained.

There’s a sort of effortless buoyancy seen in this version of the card, with the Page of Swords playing dressup in his red cape and superhero boots. He wields a sword in one hand and pounds his chest with the other.

He may try to look tough but he’s no more menacing than the pussy cat he is underneath all that posturing and bravado. Although he is known to use his sharp tongue as a weapon, in the end he’s really harmless.

The Page of Swords may have his head in the clouds but that doesn’t mean it’s not full of ideas. He’s thinking and planning and strategizing at any given moment. He may have BIG ideas — bigger than he’s prepared to handle, much like that giant sword in his hands. But it’s those ideas that propel him forward, toward ultimately accomplishing his goals.

The Page of Swords is often charming and clever. He (or she) is also somewhat immature, temperamental and emotionally unsophisticated. You may grow tired of his antics if this is someone in your life, and you may have to resist the urge to yank him by the ear and send him to his room.

But there are positive attributes associated with this card as well. There’s curiosity, innovation and idealism that’s hard to find anywhere else. These are the gifts that come with the Page of Swords — which can inspire you to reach for the stars as well.

ARIES: Nine of Wands

This is the month you may feel like you’re starting to get your mojo back, after a period of frustration, boredom, dormancy or inertia.

The Nine of Wands refers to a period of uncertainty and hesitation that comes after you’ve given what feels like your ALL and still haven’t seen the results for your efforts.

You may have been frustrated with the lack of progress or worse, come “this close” to completing your journey only to find another roadblock ahead of you. This is very similar to the frustrations and impediments that abound when you perhaps haven’t made clear plans for what you wish to do. You’re saying “go go go” while the Universe is saying “no no no.”

The reds, oranges and golds in this version of the card — from the Mary-el Tarot — combined with the ferocious tiger and the flame in the woman’s hand, speak of the need for fearless restraint. The woman takes the tiger by the tail and raises the flame high in the air in a symbol of victory.

If you look at it from an evolutionary perspective, you may be better able to understand why you’ve been forced to step back and re-evaluate your needs.

Perhaps the setbacks you’ve encountered along the way have been more than just setbacks. Perhaps they’ve been lessons in disguise. With Mercury turning retrograde in your area of communication this month what better time do you have than to “plan, plan, plan.”

Today’s card — Temperance from the Tarot of Pagan Cats –– indicates a need to go with the flow and to find ways to bring the conflicting desires of your being back toward the center.

Today’s Sun / Neptune and Mars / Chiron sextiles should make that a little easier. The Sun / Neptune aspect is all about aligning yourself with higher spiritual realms, and the Mars / Chiron aspect is about learning to surrender.

The Temperance card speaks of searching within yourself for that wellspring of inner grace and finding a way to bring the good and bad, light and dark, happy and sad back in to balance.

This card is called “Art” in some decks. It speaks of the unique creative forces that each of us possess. It speaks of seeking out symmetry and harmony. And it speaks of integrating the opposing areas of your life into one big calm, peaceful and harmonious medium.

In what areas of your life are you too inflexible, too rigid and too unwilling to hear another’s point of view? Your challenge will be to overcome those impediments and to integrate the opposing forces in your life.

In this version of the card we see a beautiful white cat in a field of daffodils lounging near the edge of a stream. She pours the contents of a fishbowl — including its lone inhabitant, a goldfish — into the water. A brilliant rainbow sits high in the sky and is reflected in the rippling stream.

Her demeanor is calm and peaceful — almost trance-like — as if she’s mesmerized by the process. This is the essence of this card: there’s a calm and graceful symmetry in taking one’s time, going with the flow, and becoming one with all that surrounds you.

There may be truths that must be faced in order to achieve the equilibrium depicted in this card. There may be messages to deliver or mysteries to unravel or even dreams to be discarded, if you’re to reach the end of the rainbow and your heart’s desire.

Nine of Wands

Today you may be feeling like you’re at the end of your rope, with so many concerns looming overhead and so little gumption left with which to tackle them.

The Nine of Wands refers to feeling beaten down by anxieties that have taken on a life of their own. You may have run into a detour just at the end of a goal, and have let it turn into an insurmountable roadblock.

The figure in this card — from the gorgeous Dreaming Way Tarot — is seated on a stump, surrounded by eight wands. The ninth wand is her walking stick that she uses to lean against. It’s almost as if it’s propping her up — so little energy does she have left to stand.

She looks tired and dejected, but if you look at the wands around her, you can see that they’re not big enough to really hold her back.

This is the message with the Nine of Wands. Your fears and your worries aren’t nearly as big as they seem. You may need that final push you get you over the hump, but there’s a clear path on the other side.

You may be working too hard, demanding too much of yourself and taking on responsibilities that others could easily assist you with.

You may see some sort of resolution in sight, but it’s still a ways off which means even more obstacles and more work than you’re sure you want to trouble with.

You may need to take a breather, like the figure in this card. But you’re almost at the finish line and are closer to your goals than you realize, so dust yourself off, get back to work, and push yourself past this final test.

The Priest

Today’s Mars / Chiron sextile could have you taking a deeper look at what you believe in, as well as how those beliefs translate to your interactions with others.

The Priest card — the Gill Tarot’s version of the Hierophant — speaks of pursuing knowledge, studying tradition, reflecting on Universal laws and principles and deciding where you stand.

There are definite religious undertones to this card, but it’s not only about religion. It’s about carrying the wisdom of the ancients forward. as a means of gaining a greater understanding for yourself. It’s also about using what you’ve learned to guide others.

This Priest stands just inside an archway between an expanse of water (instinct and emotions) and solid ground (earthly concerns). He holds a shepherd’s staff in one hand and beckons you forward with the other.

There are repeating themes here of the need to balance contradictory energies. Apart from the water / land contrast referenced above, there’s also the prominent Sun and Moon symbols on his vestment and the lily and rose patterns on his stole. Notice also the black and white checkerboard tiles underfoot. These represent the union of polarities (both figuratively and literally).

The Mars / Chiron aspect encourages you to challenge your own belief systems and get rid of that which no longer serves you. It may be as simple as picking up a book that makes you question your pre-existing notions, and it can be as profound as a spiritual awakening that strengthens your beliefs and your relationship with a higher power.

Whatever role the Priest plays in your life — whether it’s a person (as in a spiritual leader) or a mindset (traditional ideals) — you can know that there’s a reason for questioning your values. It’s all about letting go of what is no longer useful to you (spiritually or philosophically) in order to make room for what does.

Today is a good day to be thinking about your future, especially with respect to your security and financial stability.

The Wealth card — the Vision Quest Tarot’s version of the Ten of Pentacles — is about building your empire, on whatever scale that might be.

It’s about achieving success through hard work and determination, as well as the satisfaction that comes with knowing that it’s all going to pay off in the end. Not just for you but for family and loved ones, as this card is also about creating a legacy that can be built on for generations to come.

The “pentacles” in this version are ten intricately woven baskets, displayed alongside a bountiful harvest of summer fruits and winter vegetables. These are seen as a reminder of the importance of both appreciating what you have now and planning toward the future.

The greens and golds so prominent in this card are also significant. These are the colors associated with wealth, prosperity and abundance. Notice how the baskets are fashioned in the shape of a human form, lifted up on plentiful hills of grain — the earth’s most sustainable resource.

The Ten of Pentacles is about establishing a lasting legacy for yourself and your loved ones. It’s about enjoying and appreciating what you have while planning ahead for the future.

No matter how successful you are there’s always more to be done, especially as it pertains to creating something that will live on long after you’re gone. You may be thinking of starting a family or putting money aside for children you already have.

You could also be in the process of giving birth to something else — a business, a creative endeavor or a body of work. Whatever it is, know that this is something you want to be proud of, so put the extra energy into making sure you do it right.

Three of Cups

With Venus sextiling Uranus today, it’s a good time to think about taking a break from work and responsibilities and focusing on socializing with friends and loved ones.

The Three of Cups represents people gathering together to connect, interact and celebrate. It’s a happy, joyful energy that can manifest as a party or celebration, or it could be as simple as a girls night out.

Either way it’s a time of merriment and gaiety. Hanging out with like-minded people and expressing feelings of affection and good-will. There’s no room for fretting about work, and none of this sitting around ironing out political or ideological differences.

Today’s Leo Moon (still very new) fits perfectly with the sense of joy and playfulness seen in this version of the card — from the gorgeous Nusantara Tarot. The three figures raise glasses in a celebratory toast as they frolic in a field of wildflowers. There’s a sense of sisterhood and camaraderie that is emphasized here.

In terms of romance the Three of Cups can refer to reconnecting with an old flame or reuniting with an ex. It can also manifest as a natural progression from the Ace of Cups (an attraction) and the Two of Cups (a mutual attraction) to the Three of Cups (taking that attraction to the next level).

Whether you’re celebrating your own good fortune or raising your glass to toast another’s, the Three of Cups serves as a reminder that there’s always something to be grateful for, and always someone to share your gratitude with.

Four of Disks

Today’s card — Four of Disks from the Tarot of the Holy Light — is all about holding onto what you have in order to preserve and protect it.

This may be tied to money and possessions (as Pentacles are linked with the Earth archetype and therefore material and mundane concerns), but it also extends to attitudes and belief systems.

In the traditional Rider-Waite style cards a figure is usually seen holding on tightly to four gold coins, symbolizing both the desire to protect what he has and the inability to attain more. In this respect there are elements of hoarding and controlling as well as a bit of a miserly approach.

But here we see an Eagle (the animal totem for Venus) nesting in a bed of flames (Mars). Below her are four orbs (the four elements) insulated in a protective shell. She has to be able to adapt to her environment in order to protect her fragile eggs.

This scene takes place in its own protective shell, watched over carefully by a crescent moon. The Sun shines in the background and four different birds (representing four states of consciousness) grace the four corners.

This card is ruled the second decanate of Taurus — the Virgo decanate, which is ruled by Mercury and where Mercury currently resides.

This version of the Four of Pentacles is about way more than money and material possessions. It’s about preservation, protection and control. It indicates a need to watch over the things (and people and attitudes) you’re in charge of without stifling or suffocating them.

Take some time today to loosen up the reins and allow the light to come in. You’ll be better served in the long run by trusting that the Universe will support you if you allow yourself to give up some of that control.

The Sun

Today you want to focus more on what is right in your world rather than what might be wrong. The Sun card is all about happiness, optimism and vitality: being present in the moment and celebrating just being alive.

Look around you and take notice of the blessings that surround you. Step away — at least mentally — and turn your attention away from work and mundane affairs long enough to soak in the energizing rays of the Sun.

The Sun is a happy–go-lucky card that speaks of “seizing the day.” It encourages us to cast our worries aside and tap into the childlike wonder that inspires us to laugh, play, sing and dance — like the joyful figures in this card.

There’s a sense of buoyancy and effortlessness associated with this card. The Sun makes a radiant appearance, high in the sky above, shining its light on the playful figures dancing in the sand.

Notice how uninhibited and free-spirited they are in this version — from the Feng Shui Tarot — as they frolic along the shore. They may be dancing to music that only they can hear. Or they may be making their own music, thus creating their own joy.

The Sun reflects your own inner light and inspires you to let it shine. It encourages you to say yes to life rather than letting your troubles hold you back. It tells you to turn your face to the Sun rather rather than looking back over your shoulder toward whatever caused you to dim your light in the first place.

The Sun card is all about optimism, enthusiasm and personal radiance. It’s about being yourself and allowing yourself to “shine,” without any pretense or constraint. No matter where you are in the world today, the Sun is shining brightly in the sky. We may not always see it but it’s always there — and serves as a reminder of the warmth and vitality that each of us possess.
