Ask the Astrologers: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

What can astrology tell us about the prospects for happiness with different relationship partners? By looking at the connections between natal charts and composite charts, can we determine who we’re better suited for in a long-term capacity?

That’s the question we’re looking at today. A client (we’ll call her Elizabeth) wrote in asking about her connections to two different men.

The first one is her husband (whom we’ll call John). She’s been married to him for more than 10 years although for the most part she’s been unhappy. The other is a friend (whom we’ll call Mark) who she’s developed strong feelings for over the course of the last few years, although she’s never acted on them.

The Star

The Star card indicates a renewed sense of hope and faith in the Universe, usually after a difficult period. As the Star card sequentially follows the Tower in traditional tarot, there are elements of “picking up the pieces” present in this card.

You may be feeling more inspired after a period of disappointment or disillusionment. You may be more aware of your connection to other people and to the world around you. And you may be more conscious of how all of your actions reverberate into cause and effect principles that boomerang right back to you.

The Star is all about Universal harmony and synchronicity. It’s about being one with the Universe and feeling connected to every single other living thing. We see it in the almost perfect symmetry that’s present in this version of the card: from the 8-pointed star in the sky, to the mountains on either side of it, to the vessels in the woman’s hands from which she pours water into the sea.

There are as many possibilities before you as there are stars in the night sky. If you play your cards right you could be wishing on one tonight and thanking your lucky ones tomorrow!

King of Pentacles

It’s a good day to be “King!” Especially the King of Pentacles which is all about abundance, affluence, benevolence and an appreciation for the finer things in life.

This card refers to an enterprising, success-oriented individual. He (or she) has a bit of the Midas touch, knows how to attract wealth and knows how to make good use of it — neither squandering it or spending it frivolously.

The King in this deck is a robust and colorful King. He’s clothed in the finest royal attire. He’s vibrant, spirited and energetic: you can see that he’s got places to go. Yet he’s also very open and generous.There’s not an ounce of stinginess or pettiness about this King.

If this is someone coming into your life, know that he or she is there to teach you those qualities.

If this card represents you in your current capacity, don’t forget the little people — those who’ve helped you get to where you are today and have celebrated your success.

But if, on the other hand, you’ve been focusing too much on what you lack or what’s been missing in your life, it’s time to rethink the messages that you’re sending out to the Universe.

Ace of Cups

You may feel as though your Cup is running over today — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

The Ace of Cups is a card of promise and opportunity, a new or fresh perspective that is mirrored right back to you by the Universe.

All Aces are related to new and unformed energy. So even if it does manifest as something material for you — a new romantic interest or some form of external validation for example — the bottom line is that it creates a “feel good” energy which reverberates throughout your very being.

As this is the Ace of Cups, and Cups refer to emotions, intuition and feelings, it’s likely to manifest on one of these levels.

In this version of the card, we see a hand reaching out from the heavens, holding a golden chalice.

The contents of the chalice flow onto a lotus blossom beneath it, which in turn reaches up to soak up the nourishment from above.

A golden orb of sunlight emanates from the center of the chalice and a single white dove drinks from it.

The Muse

Today you could be seeing the world in a whole new light. Look around you and see what inspires you. You may find yourself day-dreaming, reminiscing about the past, revisiting childhood memories, or letting your mind wander beyond the tedium of your daily routine.

The Muse card is unique to this deck. It was created as an extra card in the Wild Green Chagallian Tarot series, inspired by the artist Marc Chagall’s own muse, his first wife, Bella.

Here we see her as a fresh young bride in a long white dress, a sprig of wild foliage in her hand. All around her — and against a rainbow backdrop — are tiny images: are they born of her imagination, dreams for her life ahead, or are they happy memories? Whatever they are, they’re sources of inspiration that are ripe for the picking.

Think about your own “Muse.” What is it that inspires you that you may have pushed aside in favor of mundane responsibilities? Or consider the qualities that you posses that can act as an inspiration for others.

Ten of Wands

Are you feeling a little grey and forlorn but want others to see you as colorful and happy?

Do you find yourself hiding behind a false persona and not yet ready to show yourself as you really are?

There is a situation going on around you just now that you are not ready to face.

You are taking some “time out” and do not wish to show your true colours (or your hand) in what you are truly thinking or what you are going to do next.

The path you stand on looks a bit precarious to me so you may wish to take a few moments to yourself and decide what your next step will be.

There is only so long you can push others away especially when you are not standing on firm ground yourself. You are not ready for what is to come next.

You need some time to gather yourself and decide what your next course of action will be.

Six of Cups

Today may see you feeling nostalgic and reminiscing about the past. An old friend from afar may suddenly and unexpectedly feel the urge to reach out to you, or you may be compelled to do the same.

The Six of Cups speaks of memories and past associations, returning to long ago places (if only in your mind).

Often times a much-loved song or an old photograph or a familiar scent will jar your memories and have you longing for a simpler time.

This beautiful card depicts a stained glass cathedral-style window (which is the theme for this entire series). A blue sky with clouds make up the background, from which six chalices are organized vertically in pairs.

Two blue angels spread incense from the corners, while each set of chalices pours a luminous rainbow substance into the next.

The author of this deck, Luigi Scapini, calls this “the fruit of ancient experience.”

You may have been taking life too seriously and need to get in touch with your inner child. Or you now may have to let your guard down and allow yourself to trust again — especially if you’ve been trying to guard your heart from pain.

The Six of Cups speaks of recapturing the openness and innocence of childhood. And remember: just like the beautiful cathedral window on this card, if you try to shut out the dark, you’ll prevent the light from getting in too.

The Moon

Today you may be struggling with feelings of anxiety over something that just doesn’t seem to be panning out they way you’d planned.

The Moon card represents our unconscious hopes and fears and is loaded with shadow material. This card tells us that things are uncertain, unsettled and unfinished and that the outcome is still very much up the air.

The Moon in this version is portrayed by Shakespeare’s Three Witches, who foretold MacBeth’s fate early on in the tragedy of the same name.

The “Weird Sisters,” (as they were also known) were mysterious, ambiguous and contradictory, much like the Moon in the night sky.

They were also dark, moody, elusive and ever-changing, and it was never quite clear whether they were real or were figments of MacBeth’s imagination, born of his deepest desires.

The Hierophant

Structures and authority have never gone down well with you and today you may find yourself just having to grin and bear these two things in your life. Although if you were smart about it you could actually decide to use this to your advantage.

Is there anything you need to think through? Have a plan for or need to call in some favors in helping you get ahead. While this card can refer to rigid authority and religious dogma, we meet a somewhat different type of Hierophant in this card.

The image on this card is from the famous series of frescoes by Simone Martini, depicting eight saints at San Francesco, Assisi. This is St. Louis of Toulouse, who was taken hostage as a child and raised by Franciscan friars. He later renounced his royal title in favor of his younger brother, and took the Franciscan vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He was renowned for holiness, sacrifice and miracles.

Notice the two keys hanging over his heart. This implies tackling a problem you’re having and coming from your heart in how you handle it. You may well find that these keys open the door for you to success, bypassing a lot of that hard work spoken of above.

Four of Pentacles

Today you may need to look at ways in which you can both expand and relax your personal boundaries. The Four of Pentacles generally refers to holding onto something (or someone) too tightly– usually due to fear.

We worry that we don’t have enough money or that a loved one may leave us, and we respond to those fears by holding on for dear life — in the hopes that we can prevent it (or them) from slipping away.

In traditional tarot decks, the Four of Pentacles card depicts a man in royal garb with four golden coins. He wears one above his crown — representing his own wealth and status; stands on two of them — representing his position in society; and holds the last one tightly to his chest — representing his reluctance to give any of it away.

In this deck however, the imagery is quite different. We see a yogi in the “pyramid” or parsvottanasana pose before a colorful Yantra symbol.

This posture — which requires the clarity and purpose to both extend one’s body and relax one’s mind — is a powerful remedy for the rigidity that is normally so inherent in this card.

Ask yourself today in what ways you need to “stretch” — as in reaching further than you ever have before; and in what ways you need to relax — be it your purse-strings, your attitudes or your personal boundaries — so that you can achieve the sense of balance, harmony and grace that is depicted in this card.

Three of Wands

Today you’re likely to be bursting at the seams with the passion and confidence needed to put some of your biggest long-term goals in place.

The Three of Wands speaks of a renewed sense of purpose, clarity and motivation – the desire and willingness to “make something happen!”

You may already have a new project in the works, in which case you’re probably beginning to see the fruits of your labors pay off. Or you may be on the verge of launching a new project, and if that’s the case, there’s no better time than the present.

The Three of Wands embodies such a powerful life-force energy that it never permits itself to be “still.” It’s always improving.

Notice how the Pegasus in this deck is both watching over his shoulder (toward what has already been accomplished) and preparing to take flight.

There’s a nobility also associated with this card, which is befitting the majestic stance of our winged friend.

You may have recently discovered that you’ve found your life’s purpose. Or you may be just now acting on aspirations that you were too afraid to reach for in the past. Either way, this card speaks of a new burst of inspiration, a second wind, and the confidence with which to see it through.

Strength

Today you may be called upon to reach into your inner reserves of strength and overcome your deepest fears. The Strength card is all about mind over matter and gaining control over the things in your life that are at risk for spiraling out of control.

It could be as simple as a pattern of second guessing yourself or talking yourself out of doing what you know is best for you. And it can be as complicated as upholding your part of a bargain you’ve made with yourself: quitting smoking for example. Dieting. Sticking to an exercise regimen. Holding your ground against temptations to “give in” when you know that doing so is not going to be in your best interests.

The woman in this card has managed to tame the beast through kindness and generosity. But she’s not exactly lying down and exposing her underbelly. Her demeanor is both soothing and reverent as she places the wreath of flowers over the lion’s mane. I love the “power” tattoo on her forearm.

Think about how far you’ve come in taming your own inner beasts. If you’re tempted to throw in the towel, remember that doing so will only cause you to lose momentum.

The Strength card encourages you to not only meet your fears head on, but to transform them by neutralizing the power they hold over you. Once you do that you’ll find that they weren’t so frightening after all.
